Tiebreaker determines the new president for Citrus’ student government

The new president of the Associated Students of Citrus College was selected after a tiebreaker vote on March 11 in the Campus Center.

At the ASCC meeting, one of the biggest discussions was who would be the next president to fill in after their previous one, Eden Yang, stepped down at the beginning of the spring 2025 semester.

Commissioner at Large Alexa Gonzalez won with three votes.

During the vote, Gonzalez gave a short speech on why she should be the president. It primarily focused on how ASCC didn’t have a president.

“As we know our previous president has stepped down,” Gonzalez said. “While this change might bring some challenges, I hope we all notice it can also bring us closer and strengthen our team.”

The other candidate, Commissioner at Large Natalie Kwok, came close with two votes.

Gonzalez and Kwok were originally tied with two votes, but Student Trustee Jonathan Johnson was able to break the tie with his vote.

Johnson said he had been part of ASCC a little while before the current commissioners joined, so he was nervous about being the tiebreaker for the new elected president.

“They are both very capable leaders,” Johnson said. “We all started here together, so it was a little uncomfortable. But, you know, she (Gonzalez) had a great speech so that’s who I went with.”

Kwok said she was happy about the outcome of the vote.

“I loved it,” Kwok said. “She (Gonzalez) had a really great outstanding speech. I like working with everyone.”
