Citrus’ men’s basketball extended their winning streak to 15 after completing their conference sweep of Antelope Valley Feb. 5, beating them 103-89.
Citrus guard Tyler Isaak shined bright for the Owls, propelling them to 9-0 in conference. Isaak had 28 points going 10-16 from the field while splashing two threes.
“I think every game is important … we can’t really get complacent because one loss affects you a lot,” Isaak said. “Especially in league, one loss and we share the whole league title.”
The Owls ended the game with a 14 point lead, their smallest lead in six games.
Citrus point guard Amiri Meadows, said that the team needs to start managing their complacency more to start closing out games.
“We just talked about it in the locker room, we tend to get complacent,” Meadows said. “We just talked about doing it for 40 minutes straight, that’s our thing.”
Complacency aside, the Owls have their eyes set on winning a conference championship. Head coach Brett Lauer said his team is going to take it game by game.
“We want to be playing good basketball when it matters most, our first goal is to win a conference,” Lauer said. “Making sure we take it one game at a time, get better every game, and ascend when it means the most.”
Owls guard Ryan Raad also agrees with the coaches philosophy of taking the games step by step.
“We need to hone in on all the little stuff, make sure that it is set to take care of the big stuff,” Raad said. “We knew what it was from the jump, the coaches set the expectations for us and now we’re here handling business.”
The Owls will be back in action at 5 p.m. on Feb 8. hoping to extend their 16-game winning streak when they take the journey to Santa Clarita to play College of the Canyons. Canyons are two wins ahead of Antelope Valley in the Western State-South standing and have something to prove after being thrashed by the Owls 111-73 in their first meeting.
Owls point guard KJ Perry, said the team is ready for the challenge.
“When teams compete better, and we face better teams, we all go harder,” Perry said.
Catch the Owls next home game at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 when they take on Santa Monica College.
