Review: The summer rise of Sabrina Carpenter

Sabrina Carpenter is taking over pop music in a way we have not seen in a while. It’s been two years since her last album release, and she is back with her sixth studio album, “Short n’ Sweet.”

With the success of her two songs “Nonsense” and “Feathers” from her last album “Emails I Can’t Send,” people were excited to hear what she had in store for her new album.

This album is one of her best because she shares a variety of different songs. It gives a mix of emotions and explains situations that could fit a certain moment in life, which makes it relatable.

Carpenter debuted her pop lead single “Espresso” in April at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. It quickly became a summer hit song, charting No. 1 on the U.K. Singles Chart. It is the third- fastest song to hit 1 billion streams on Spotify.

Carpenter released another single in June titled “Please Please Please” that explains entering a new relationship and warning the guy to stay on her good side. It is more of a country pop song with elements of rock that are different from what listeners have heard from her previously.

She released a music video for this song that had a big reaction from her fans and media. The music video featured Carpenter herself and actor Barry Keoghan, strengthening the rumors of their relationship that people had been speculating prior to the release of the video. This song became her first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

With the first two singles being a success, fans are excited and could not wait to hear more from “Short n’ Sweet.”

The album opened with her third single called “Taste”, which includes both pop and rock instrumental. The song talks about how her impact remains with her ex-partner even after they’ve both entered new relationships.

This song is bold and opens her album with high energy. Fans speculate this song to be about singer Shawn Mendes and the alleged love triangle between Carpenter, Mendes and Camila Cabello.

Going through the album, most songs are upbeat and catchy, with a ‘90s synth and disco beat that fits the aesthetic of the album. Carpenter shows her character through her humorous lyrics. It shows a confident, sarcastic and whimsical side of her. Other than her single “Espresso,” there are more songs that capture a perfect example of that.

There are a few songs that have a more emotional and melancholy feeling to it. The songs are relatable, as they describe heartbreak and complicated relationships.

The first song that transitions to an emotional ballad is “Sharpest Tool.” The lyrics explain the painful feeling of a one-sided relationship. She was vulnerable in her lyrics that showcased how she felt.

“I thought about some of these relationships and how some of them were the shortest I’ve ever had and they affected me the most,” Carpenter said in an interview with radio DJ Zane Lowe.

This is a pop album with components of rock, R&B, ballads and country. Although there are a variety of different sounds on this album, not only do they fit well, but they tell a story. When listening through the album, it ends with getting a better understanding of Carpenter’s personality.

Since Carpenter’s album release on Aug. 23, it has been highly successful, making it her first No. 1 album. Her three singles made the top five while the rest of the songs on the album made the top 50 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Carpenter expressed her appreciation to her fans on Instagram, “can’t express my gratitude. My first #1 album!!!! thank you for listening to short n’ sweet. thank you for believing in me all these years! couldn’t do any of this without you 💋:’) this feels really special. love you all,” she said.

It is no doubt that Carpenter deserves the recognition for her work after being in the industry for 10 years. She worked so hard to get to where she is right now. Fans and everyone around the world are loving “Short n’ Sweet.” She is currently on her U.S. tour, which is named after her album.

It would be no surprise if this album wins numerous awards this year.
