Review: Spinning the coolest and newest album from Wallows

Indie band Wallows are back in listeners’ headphones with their third studio album “Model.” Wallows consist of three members: Dylan Minnette (vocals and guitar), Braeden Lemasters (guitar and vocals), and Cole Preston (drums and vocals). Non-Wallows fans might recognize the frontman, Dylan Minnette, from the hit Netflix series “13 Reasons Why” and films like “Goosebumps” from 2015 and the newest “Scream” reboot from 2022.

The band has grown in popularity throughout the years, especially with its debut album, “Nothing Happens,” and its biggest song to date called “Are You Bored Yet?” which features fellow indie artist Clairo. The song peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart and also reached double-platinum status.

If there’s an album that perfectly fits the upcoming summer feeling, this is it. The sound Wallows brings to this album feels like a coming-of-age film that takes place during a sunny summer day. The 12 songs on this album encapsulates the feeling of adolescence and stepping foot in the summer mood.

With anticipation for the album, the band constantly released teasers after teasers for its fans. The wait was definitely worth it as the band worked with new sounds with this album and stepped out of its normal sound heard in the previous albums “Nothing Happens” and “Tell Me That It’s Over.”

Finally in February of this year, the band released its lead single for the album, “Your Apartment.” A month later, the album was finally announced with the release date of May 25 along with the announcement of their second single “Calling After Me.”

When comparing this album to their previous two, this album feels like the perfect album to play while cruising down to the beach or even hanging out on the beach. Their previous albums, “Nothing Happens” and “Tell Me That It’s Over,” require listeners to sit down and take it all in at once. The two albums make listeners analyze the lyrics and dive into the meanings of the songs right off the bat.

“This is our most listenable album yet,” Minnette said in the band’s Zach Sang Show interview. “It’s easy to put on and it just flies by.” The shorter length of the songs add to the ease of listening to the album. No matter how short or long this album is, this tracklist is a great piece of work.

This album is one of Wallows’ best set of songs to date. Make sure to check out this album and even stop by their upcoming tour this fall because hearing these songs would be 10 times better live.
