The annual MET Gala took place on May 6, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and had some unique and creative looks. Fashion is a form of expression, in which designers use their imagination and bring it to life through their clothing.
The Gala is a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s costume institute. This year’s dress code was “The Garden of Time.”
Well-known celebrities such as Zendaya, Nicki Minaj, Bad Bunny and more attended this year.
Here are the three best and worst looks on the red carpet.
Coming in first place for the best look on the red carpet was Alia Bhatt. The British actress who is known for her Hindi films pulled off a gorgeous mint green floral custom saree designed by Sabyasachi Mukherjee.
Choosing to wear a saree on the red carpet was an incredible choice as it made Bhatt stand out from the rest of the attendees. Her saree made her look like a princess straight out of a fairytale.
The saree was made with time and dedication specially to fit the dress code. Bhatt said in a Vogue interview the saree took 1,905 hours to make, which in the end paid off because Bhatt looked beautiful.
The second-best look on the red carpet was Zendaya in custom Maison Margiela by John Galliano.
Her gown matched the dress code perfectly. It had a lot of unique details that match with “The Garden of Time.” The metallic berries and bird on her neck were an excellent addition to her outfit.
The makeup added to the entire outfit. It made her look like a character from a mythical story, which just captured the eye’s attention.
Out of the three beautiful looks that night, Zendaya’s first look was the best.
The third-best look of the night was Tyla, a South African singer, who showed up to the MET Gala wearing a dress that looked like sand, symbolizing the sand in an hourglass.
The dress clearly used her body as the main focus. In an interview with Vogue, Tyla said she worked with a Balmain team and wanted to look like an hourglass to fit the dress code.
In another interview the creative director of Balmain, Olivier Rousteng, told The Hollywood Reporter, the dress was meant to be worn once, making the dress itself one of a kind, especially since it was molded to fit Tyla’s body.
Though there were a lot of stunning looks at this year’s Gala, some of the other looks that just were underwhelming or a bit too much.
These were the three worst looks of the Gala this year.
Coming in at no.1 is Lizzo. She wore a brown fitted dress and a headpiece that resembled a flower, designed by the Paris-based label Weinsanto.
Though the dress itself was not ugly, the headpiece was not a good addition.
It looked more like a cone than a flower. Maybe if the headpiece had been a flower crown it would’ve worked.
A lot of people did not like her MET Gala look, as it was rather underwhelming compared to her 2022 outfit. People have made comments saying Lizzo looked like Groot from the movie “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
The second-worst dressed was Jessica Serfaty. Her dress was blooming in flowers. Literally.
She wore a custom Dolce & Gabbana dress that looked more like a bed sheet covered in flowers.
Though her outfit did look better when she slid the dress down her shoulders, the dress couldn’t help but look like the one Florence Pugh wore at the ending scene of the movie “Midsommer.” It just threw things off completely.
And last of the worst looks for the MET Gala comes Brie Larson, wearing a double- layered Prada dress.
Though the first layer is not bad and the orangish color was cute, the second layer is what ruined it.
An Associated Press news article said Larson’s dress was meant to resemble an hourglass.
It looked like a block of ice on top of her. It just didn’t fit the theme. It didn’t look like it had anything to do with “Garden of Time.”
Though some looks were great and others not-so-great looks at the Gala, all of them were creative in their own way.
It’s clear the designers made a huge effort to express and share their work. Fashion will always give designers an opportunity to be inspired and inspire the audience.
