Opinion: Deepfakes pose risk to honesty and integrity

Over the past few years, AI has evolved and grown in popularity and accessibility.

However, AI is known to pose many risks to honesty and integrity.

AI has become a popular way for scammers to phish people, commit identity theft or use fake images or videos of people to cyberbully.

Since many people may not realize that something has been artificially generated, this can be dangerous. Deepfake images or videos generated of someone in a negative manner can pose a risk to their employment or enrollment at school.

AI is becoming more and more advanced each day. Many people may not realize what they are being shown is not real. It is absolutely terrifying knowing how much harm people are capable of causing, wielding AI to their advantage.

In January, an incident occurred involving nonconsensual AI-generated pornographic images of Taylor Swift. If deepfakes become more commonplace, it could become difficult to differentiate between real and fake events, especially with the advancement of AI-generated videos.

Business Wire found that instances of deepfake fraud increased from 0.2% to 2.6% from 2022 to the first quarter of 2023. Pew Research found that 66% of Americans have at least sometime encountered a fake image online.

AI deepfakes can impact the outcome of a court case. They could be used to accuse someone of a crime they never committed, or for creating cases that are made up. This could cause harm to innocent people and the families of victims.

While AI generated content can be beneficial in several career fields, it has the potential to be misused. Putting necessary restrictions or regulations in place could help reduce cybercrimes such as phishing and identity theft.

It is important for AI companies to fully understand the risks that come with AI-generated photos and videos. Developers have a responsibility to understand not only how their tools can be used for good, but how they may be misused and put the guardrails in place to keep people safe.
