Citrus College Board of Trustees member Mary Ann Lutz is running for U.S. Congress this year.
She is running to serve District 31, which is San Gabriel Valley. She is no stranger to public service, as she has served as the mayor of Monrovia in 2009 and was re-elected twice. She has also served as the liaison/policy adviser to Democratic Congresswoman Grace F. Napolitano. In addition, Lutz has had several other key roles in public service, including serving on the Board of Trustees at Citrus since November 2020.
Now, she embarks on a big journey, the road to U.S. Congress. Lutz said that “serving as an elected official is a great honor and asking people for their vote is a large responsibility.” She also noted that her greatest inspiration to run is Citrus College and its students and she plans to apply what she has learned as a trustee member to her work as a congresswoman.
She will be running as a Democrat against five other Democratic candidates, two Republican candidates, and one American Solidarity candidate. Her opponents include Bob Archuleta (D), Gil Cisneros (D), Gregory Hafif (D), Susan Rubio (D), Ricardo Vasques (D), Daniel Martinez (R), Elvira Moreno (R) and Erskine Levi (American Solidarity Party). She is running for Napolitano’s seat, as she will be retiring at the end of this term.
Lutz has several goals on her agenda that she wishes to accomplish while in office. She noted that her top priorities are education, public safety, the environment and good jobs. “As a Citrus College Trustee, I am well aware of the importance of an affordable, accessible, quality education and want to make sure that is available to all. We must also work to ensure that we have safe neighborhoods, that our air is clean, water is safe to drink, and reversing global warming a priority while creating the good jobs that provide living wages and the benefits that working families need,” she said.
The primary election will take place on March 5, 2024, and the general election will take place on Nov. 5, 2024. The top two candidates with the most votes will advance from the primary to the general. Lutz’s term on the Citrus Board of Trustees is set to end in December 2024. If she leaves the Board of Trustees, a new candidate will run for her seat which has yet to be announced.
