Update 8/27/20 – Correction – This article previously alluded that showers will be open to homeless students during the closure of the Citrus College campus. However, showers have not been available to any students as the campus is currently closed to students. Citrus College is contemplating allowing students to use the showers upon the reopening of campus but no decision has been made at this time.
Citrus College will offer showers to homeless students. The initiative was discussed in the Citrus Community College District Academic Senate Council Agenda meeting on May 13 over Zoom.
“Any homeless student who is enrolled in coursework has paid enrollment fees, and is in good standing with the District,” the meeting summary said about those who can use the showers.
The showers are located in the PE Building and will operate between 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday during semesters, excluding holidays. Alternative showers will be available from noon to 2:00 p.m. during sporting events that conflict with the hours.
However, showers are currently unavailable to any students as the CItrus College campus is closed due to COVID-19.
The Agenda’s minutes said a homeless person is defined as someone who doesn’t have a ‘fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.’
The Agenda also said students who can take use the showers are those sharing housing with another person due to loss of housing, economic hardship, those living in motels, hotels, trailer parks or camping grounds due to lack of alternative accommodations. Students eligible are those living in transitional shelters, those who have a public or private nighttime residence ‘not designated for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings.’
The Agenda also said Students living in ‘cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings’ can take advantage of the showers on campus.
