Jewelry heist suspects exchange fire with police blocks from Citrus campus

One suspect shot dead by police, second still at large

Police fired at an armed robbery suspect near the Lamas Jewelry Store on Sept. 6 in Glendora.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Lt. Robert Westphal said a suspect was shot by police at about 12:15p.m. He died upon arrival at a nearby hospital. Two suspects were armed with hand guns, not rifles, as previously reported.

A woman waiting in her car outside the jewelry store was also detained.

Police said a second suspect fled on foot. He is described as a black male, armed and dangerous. Police said the suspect has a thin build, with short dreadlocks, last seen in a white T-shirt and blue jeans

Glendora Police Capt. Matt Egan said the second suspect is in a containment area between Route 66 and Mauna Loa Avenue. A sheriff’s helicopter circled the sky over Citrus College searching for the missing suspect. He was described as armed and dangerous.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department reported a person was evacuated from the scene to a nearby trauma center.

Stanton Elementary in Glendora was on lockdown due to the shooting. The elementary school students were released to parents at Citrus Stadium. Glendora Police opened a command center at the stadium.
