Citrus student throws books and pulls fire alarm in library

Several librarians and students said a man threw books off shelves, ripped down a poster and pulled a fire alarm before fleeing the Hayden Memorial Library on May 13.

A suspect was arrested by Glendora Police within an hour of the alarm sounding at 3:45 p.m.

Witnesses described the suspect as a short man wearing black clothes and a brown backpack.

Theater majors George Diaz and Moise Isaac said they witnessed the man walking quickly through the library’s second floor stacks.

“He was just b-walking, throwing things around, throwing paper and pulled the alarm,” Diaz said.

Computer science major William Moynihan said he was writing a paper in the second floor stacks when he was disturbed by a ruckus.

“He was making a bunch of noise up on the second story where I was working on the essay,” Moynihan said. “I heard a noise like someone fell over and saw him walk past really quickly.”

Moynihan said the alarm sounded after he witnessed the man running.

A library employee, who asked not to be named, said he saw a student rip a Night Owls poster off a wall and pull the alarm on the second floor before running out of the building.

“He came in angry,” the employee said. “When he came past checkout, he ripped off one of those Night Owls signs. He crumpled it and threw it at reserves.”

The employee said he has seen the student many times, and the student “walked in with an attitude” that day.

Later, the employee was searching the library for a pair of shoes he said the disgruntled student said were missing.
