Language in the Associated Students of Citrus College constitution was amended to permit senators and commissioners to hold student office for one year rather than one semester.
The changes were sent to the ASCC by a student referendum held Oct. 23 -24.
ASCC President Fernando Flores said the motion passed without opposition.
The Citrus College Board of Trustees approved changes to the constitution on Dec. 4.
Students enrolled in at least six units may submit applications to run for office at the beginning of the spring semester.
Elections for ASCC senate will occur online in the second week of April.
Depending on their positions, ASCC officers can make between $100 and $500 per semester.
ASCC staff adviser and Student Life Supervisor Rosario Garcia said the new term limits will help student representatives adjust to their positions.
“It does take one full semester for officers to understand their role,” Garcia said. “Finally, at the end of the semester they understood what they had to do.”
Garcia said the new rules may attract more applicants to student government.
“And sometimes they’d decide not to do it again because they were busier at the end of the semester,” Garcia said. “They might be busy with finals.”
Since ASCC switched to electronic voting in spring 2017 turnout has more than doubled.
Garcia said she hopes the new measure will increase voter turnout.
“It is very important to vote because the ASCC executive board, they’re the ones that decide how to spend the student service fee budget,” Garcia said.
