Free food and drinks were provided while students recited their own poetry, published poems and song lyrics they wanted to share.

Readers covered romance, emotional experience, politics and social issues.

Nursing major, Vivianne Valencia read her poetry for the first time in front of an audience. She heard about the event in the Latinos Unidos Student Association, which frequently collaborates in events with BSU.

ASCC Vice President Makayla Pedroza recited “Touched by an Angel” by Maya Angelou. She dedicated the lyrics to a friend responsible for organizing the event.

Elisabeth Ritacca, BSU’s advisor, said the club was founded in 2004, closed because of low membership and rebooted two years ago.

“The main goal is making awareness on campus about what we do as a club because a lot of people don’t know about it, and then increasing membership,” Ritacca said.

BSU meets from noon to 1 p.m. every Tuesday in room CI 137. The group visits museum, performs community service and  screens films on campus.

Members said they hope to continue in the future.

BSU posts events on the Citrus College calendar, posters around campus and their Instagram page @bsu.citrus..
