This semester Citrus College Learning Center moved to a portable classroom across the Math building, P1 109.
Citrus offers free tutoring at the center, but students are required to show their Citrus identification.
Citrus Instructional Lab Technician Jody Fehr supervisors the center.
“Our goal is to make tutoring part of the culture,” Fehr said.
The Learning Center offers drop-in tutoring and one-on-one appointments for logic, philosophy, English, Spanish, among other subjects.\
Other campus centers also offer tutoring: the College Success Center in P1 109 , the ESL Lab, the Testing Center in IS 107 , the Speech Lab, the STEM Lab in MA 129, and the Writing Lab.
These study rooms help students receive help.
Tutoring is available from 8 a.m. until 6.45p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Friday in P1 109.
Sophomore administration of justice major La’Keha Green uses the tutoring center twice per week.
“Students should take advantage and appreciate what the tutorial services and learning center are offering because one, this is free, and two, it helps your chances of becoming better,” Green said.
The Learning Center is embedding tutors to where they are going inside the classrooms to help students with the work. They are making a push for students to have the advantage of unlimited time in lab, making an extension of the hours they offer, and how the overcome is simply positive because in the afternoon more students show up for tutoring.
Also in the program, “We want you to be comfortable,” Gerald Helm, learning center supervisor said. They offer different methods on how students can get tutored which are group settings, form study groups inside and outside of the classrooms.
Tutoring is an educational opportunity that is not offered to many students. Students do not take advantage or seize the opportunity of such a limited thing. It is unfortunate for those in need to not be afforded such a great investment.
With Citrus having an abundance of offered subjects allows for those typically considered an afterthought are given an even playing field within the slightly skewed educational system that overlooks a particular economic group.
Education can be considered to be a luxury for some students. However, students have the chance to get financial aid, or some type of assistance. By the way, the tuition already pays for you to go to tutoring.
Students use the sources that are available to you. In return students that are getting “assistance from the Learning Center are the ones who have a higher GPA.” Fehr said. “Coming from low economic background and/or impoverished community attending a four year university is not possible and at most is not even a fathomable thought.”
Citrus giving students tutoring allows them to get the assistance they need to be able to compete at the 4-year level.
If students are interested in giving back and becoming a tutor the Learning Center is looking for applicants. They will be hiring until September 28. If not, this time students can come back in Winter 2019 and apply.

An instructor recommendation is required and your grade will need to be verified for each class or subject you will be tutoring. Click here for the Letter of Recommendation for instructors. - You must complete an initial training in tutoring methods, and participate in ongoing training.
