A blocked punt from sophomore defensive end Grant Trueman led to a 5-yard rush touchdown by sophomore running back James Brown with four seconds left in the third quarter.
The Owls won against Antelope Valley Marauders 13-7.
The teams were scoreless through two-quarters of play. Freshman running back Marcus Knight had seven attempts and ran for 74 yards in the first half.
Defensive line freshman Nathaniel Bowie screamed for his teammates from the sideline throughout the first half, but nothing changed.
“Something has to give,” said Braxton Brown, the Owls defensive back coach. “Don’t hold nothing back.”
Freshman Justyn Alexander brought confidence to the Owls’ running game when they came back late in the fourth quarter to take the lead.
“We have to trust one another,” said DJ Allen, the Owls linebacker. “Simple as that.”
Quarterback Kody Olmos drove in a 1-yard touchdown to gain the lead for the Owls.
Marauders sophomore wide receiver Derrick McDonald caught a 17-yard pass from freshman quarterback Deshawn Boswell to get their first numbers on the scoreboard.
However, the Citrus Owls defense regain in control. They only gave up seven points and a total of 170 yards to the Marauders.
“We know as players we can’t be complacent, especially in a conference game.“ said Tre Curtis, the Owls freshman cornerback. “It’s time to run plays that can get us the win.”
The Owls next conference game is against the Eagles at 1 p.m on Nov. 10 at Mt. San Jacinto.
