Women’s water polo loses scrimmage to former assistant coach

Citrus College women’s water polo lost an exhibition game against Chaffey College on Aug. 31 at home.

Owls head coach Jennifer Spalding faced her former assistant coach Beck Weiny, who leads the Panthers. Weiny left with a win.

The Owls led 4-3 early in the second period but fell behind and did not regain the lead.

In 2017, the Owls broke the college wins record for a second straight year. Spalding said she hopes the owls can continue to ride the wave of record-setting seasons, which includes a 2017 Western State Conference Finals appearance.

“The first year I was here, we were the best in school history,” Spalding said. “Then we topped that, and this year I’m hoping we can top that again.”

Spalding spoke highly of new players on the roster this season. Despite the squad’s youth, Spalding said their effort and temperament is exactly what she wants.

“We are really young this year, but the girls have a great attitude and want to put in the work,” Spalding said.

The coach said she does not worry about her team’s lack of star power.

“That’s one of the things I love about this team this year,” Spalding said. “Everyone’s equal. It’s not on anyone’s shoulders to win a game, which is amazing.”

The Owls have the regular season to improve on their 2017 success. The team travels to San Joaquin Delta College on Sept. 7 to play the Mustangs.
